In a common two-motor design, separate drives adjust the glass vertically and horizontally. The power-fold drive rotates the mirror head relative to the base. The arrangement and integration of the mechanisms vary by component design.

SELECTION IN CONTEXT

Can mirror adjustment and power folding use the same grease?

Assess a common grease against the materials, functions and torque limits of both adjustment and folding. Evaluate gear meshes, shafts/guides and functional friction contacts separately.

Match the contact, condition and evidence

Define the differences between contacts before comparing candidate materials.

ContactSelection & evaluationRecord
Adjustment gears & arc teethIdentify working tooth contacts and mating materials; compare polymer compatibility, smooth motion and noise.Polymer grade, tooth contacts, operating angle and application point/dose
Folding worm & gearsReview cold starts, operating current/torque, tooth condition and lubricant condition after cycling.Minimum temperature, load, current/torque and cycles
Folding pivot & glass supportsReview lubrication at shafts/guides alongside the separate functions of holding and positioning.Contact materials, clearances, drag, holding and post-cycle condition
Functional friction contactsFollow the design for whether lubrication is required and compare drive/slip torque with the specification; do not indiscriminately reduce required friction.Contact function, specified material/dose and drive/slip torque

How to compare candidates

  1. Separate adjustment and folding

Use the drawing or photos to identify working contacts, application points and surfaces that must remain unlubricated.

  2. Define materials and targets

Record the current material, minimum temperature, noise, operating current/torque and cycles.

  3. Compare assemblies with controlled dosing

Compare candidates at matching locations/doses and review cold starts, post-cycle motion and component condition.

Application questions

Should the whole moving assembly be coated?

Control application at the contacts and doses specified by the design. Review migration, contamination of electrical contacts and effects on holding or clutch functions.

Is a quieter mirror drive enough for approval?

Compare cold starts, current/torque, positioning, holding and post-cycle condition as well as noise. Review polymer compatibility and changeover from the current material.

What should be supplied for an enquiry?

Share whether the drive adjusts or folds, a photo or drawing, contact materials, current lubricant, the issue and known temperature/test conditions.

Narrow the material choice using the actual assembly

Contacts in one mirror can have different materials and functions. Use the actual parts, current material and requirements to review grade-specific records and plan sample testing.

Discuss the adjustment or folding conditions

Start with the component and issue. The form opens with this mirror application selected.
